Review of Two Studies on African Orphans
[ send me this essay ]
A 12 page paper reviewing two studies of orphaned African children. There are many conflicting reports coming out of Africa regarding the status of children. At the same time that portions of the popular press are reporting that fully one million AIDS orphans have nowhere to go, nowhere to live and no one to care for them, at least two large studies find that there are no great health or social differences between orphans and those living with biological parents. The purpose here is to review "Health and nutritional status of orphans <6 years old cared for by relatives in western Kenya" and "The social situation of motherless children in rural and urban areas of Guinea-Bissau" in context. Neither of these primary studies seems to answer any specific questions about the lives of orphans in two areas of Africa. They do, however, contribute to the body of knowledge surrounding conditions that are developing in response to the continued progress of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

Rigoberta Menchu’s Expanding Understanding of “Community”
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing Rigoberta Menchu’s expanding understanding of “community”. Rigoberta Menchu, a Mayan born in poverty in Guatemala, probably did not intend to become an international spokesperson for human rights and global community responsibility but living in the oppressed poor population of Guatemala and seeing her family members killed by the government no doubt had a great impact on her perspective. Her father, a fighter for independence of the people of Guatemala was eventually killed for his beliefs and Menchu continued his battle. Her Mayan culture already had an open perspective of community responsibility in regards to the raising of children. This perspective of community was broadened to include the community of all of the people of her country through her education with Catholic Action which also provided her with the reading, writing and language skills needed to organize political action. Once in Mexico, Menchu realized the enormity of the oppression which existed throughout the world and her idea of community and global responsibility further expanded to include all those in the global community.
