The Bahamas
[ send me this essay ]
14 pages in length. The Bahamian history begins with the Lukku-Cairi, the South American people who were first to settle upon the islands. Taking up residency upon the vast coral formations that formed the islands, they claimed sole inhabitancy for a lengthy period before Christopher Columbus sailed ashore, claimed the land as Spain's and renamed them the Lucayan Indians. A strong oppression soon commenced as Spain sought to take what it could from the islands' natural resources; however, when it was learned that little gold, silver or other valuable trading commodities were availed, the grip of control gradually loosened. The Bioaccumulation of Toxins in the Canadian Arctic
[ send me this essay ]
This is an 8 page paper discussing the bioaccumulation of toxins in the Canadian Arctic. Presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) which include pesticides, industrial compounds, and combustion by-products are one of the major environmental and health concerns within the Canadian Arctic regions today. Measurement of POP bioconcentration or bioaccumulation levels within the Arctic have determined that the toxic contaminants primarily do not originate within the Arctic and therefore are transported there through air or water currents or migratory animals. The contaminants are considered persistent because they are able to exist for a great length of time and can tolerate many conditions. POPs are also lipophilic in which they are concentrated in the fats of animals. Because of this, bioaccumulation levels are higher in those animals which are higher on the food chain such as humans and polar bears as the contaminants get passed on through the digestion of the fat of animals with POPs in their system and makes them an extreme health hazard.

The prefabricated idea that there was a natural energy shortage caused overwhelming alarm for Californians in 1996, inasmuch as Middle East suppliers held back millions of barrels of oil in order to manipulate their political power. Now, some five years later, California is once again at the mercy of oil producers who continue to capitalize upon the need for one of life's most precious commodities.
