"Catcher In The Rye" And "Good Will Hunting" - Compare/Contrast
[ send me this essay ]
3 pages in length. Will Hunting is no more able to tap into his inherent genius than he is ready to relinquish his blue collar roots - not so much because he is not interested in achieving such recognized accomplishment but because - like with most other things in his life including Skylar - he does not believe he deserves it. Similarly, a seemingly intangible commodity of innocence and vulnerability is what appeals to Holden, which is driven by his sense of fear and isolation. Salinger is instrumental in demonstrating the inherent strength of constitution and will for survival, even in the face of despair and disappointment. Both men harbor deep issues of worthiness as they traverse their respective life paths; only through the strength of others does each protagonist determine whether it is his worth or merely the strength of commitment that wins out. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
