Anita Desai/Fire on the Mountain
[ send me this essay ]
An 11 page research paper that examines the work of Indian novelist Anita Desai. Using her novel Fire on the Mountain as representative of Desai's fiction, the writer argues that when Desai's work is examined in light of the historical development of Indian nationalism, it becomes readily apparent that the emotional dilemma of her protagonist is a direct result of the gendered nature of Indian nationalism that was formulated during the colonial period. Anita Desai/In Custody
[ send me this essay ]
A 4 page essay that examines Anita Desai's novel In Custody. The writer argues that the author addresses the construction of Indian nationality and how this perception is influenced by the past while affecting the present. In so doing, Desai addresses literary and academic illusions. Desai's protagonist, Deven, is a professor of Hindi, who idealizes the Indian past. He projects his idealized version of what India once was onto the person of a renowned poet, whom he does not live up to his expectations. Desai shows how Desai's projections and the failure of these projections provide a scathing critique of patriarchal Indian society. No additional sources cited.

Ann Banks' "First Person America" And John Ford's "Stagecoach": Representation Of Social and Economic Changes In The 1930s
[ send me this essay ]
5 pages in length. Ann Banks' "First Person America" and John Ford's "Stagecoach" individually represent a changing class-consciousness related to modifying economic and social conditions of the 1930s. Indeed, it can readily be argued that imaginative texts do not directly document such experiences of the 1930s, but rather they indirectly represent conflicts, tensions, changing values and the ever shifting conditions of the particular setting. Anna of the Five Towns
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page paper discussing capitalism in the book, “Anna of
the Five Towns,” by Arnold Bennett. Bennet’s book is a very stereotypical novel, at least
in its characterizations. But it is this very aspect of the literary work that is so very
essential to defining the realities of capitalism, both in the novel and in reality. The
characters are either victims of capitalism, or perfect examples of rigid successes. It is a
very intriguing look into the past, as well as the present. No additional sources cited.

Anne Bradshaw/'Before the Birth of One of Her Children'
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page analysis of this poem by early American poet Anne Bradstreet. The writer argues that Bradstreet appears to be trying to influence how her husband might react if the outcome her impending childbirth should be her own death. Anne Bradsreet/In Reference to Her Children, 23 June 1659
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page explication of this poem by Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672), America's first published poet, who wrote her verse while raising eight children, and performing all of the wifely duties expected of Puritan wife in colonial New England (Anne Bradstreet). While Bradstreet stepped somewhat outside the societal sphere of hearth and home, which was the accepted realm of women, by writing verse, her verse underscored her understanding of the domestic role, and therefore, did not offend Puritan society. Her poem "In Reference to her Children, 23 June 1659" expresses a mother's pride at the accomplishments of her children, as well as mother's fears at having her little ones leave the "nest" and fly away on their own. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Anne Bradstreet/Rhetoric, Themes & Style
[ send me this essay ]
A 4 page research paper essay that analyzes and discusses the work of Anne Bradstreet, who was the first American poet to have her work published. Bradstreet accomplished this while simultaneously raising eight children within the social context of Puritan colonial society, which had strict views on appropriate decorum and gender roles. While it violates Puritan concepts of the appropriate role for a woman by Bradstreet entering the public arena as a published author, examination of her rhetoric, themes and style demonstrates why Bradstreet’s work met with widespread approval. Basically, this was because her poems demonstrated her dedicated religious orientation and her love and dedication to her family. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
