August Wilson/The Piano Lesson
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page essay that examines August Wilson's play, The Piano Lesson. The writer argues that there are too fundamental perspectives – that of Berniece who wants to keep the piano, which is a 135-year-old family heirloom; or that of her brother Boy Willie – who wants to sell the piano so that he can raise enough money to close a deal on a small plot of land. While both viewpoints are valid – according to their own criteria -- Berniece holds the moral high ground, and by proving this to her brother, she not only gives her own life new direction, but his also. Aura by Carlos Fuentes
[ send me this essay ]
5 pages. Aura was first published in
1962 by Carlos Fuentes. It is a novel filled with dualities and
comparisons such as that of masculine and feminine, young and
old, the beautiful and the deteriorating, life and death and
darkness and light. It is this very combination of opposites
which makes the novel so compelling to read and it becomes a
novel of changing and at the same time, the things that remain
the same. Bibliography lists one source.

Austen's Northanger Abbey: The Character of
General Tilney
[ send me this essay ]
(5 pp). Northanger Abbey was written in 1797-98
under a different title. The manuscript was
revised around 1803 and sold to a London publisher,
Crosbie & Co., who sold it back in 1816. The
Signet Classic text is based on the first edition,
published by John Murray, London, in 1818--the year
following Miss Austen's death.
General Tilney 'not past the vigour of life,
' is the character which we will examine in this
discussion. The General as he is often referred to
in the text serves as the example of the 'old school,
' both as a male and as a parent. Since we are
talking of a coming of age story it is not unusual
that this character serves as a foil for the young
lady in question.
