Catalina de Erauso's "Lieutenant Nun: Memoir Of A Basque Transvestite In The New World" - Human Conflict
[ send me this essay ]
3 pages in length. While Catalina de Erauso's raucous autobiography entitled Lieutenant Nun: Memoir of a Basque Transvestite in the New World does incorporate the undercurrent of cross dressing and alternative lifestyles, an even greater subtext is the gratuitous and very common reality of human conflict. From the moment she enters the nunnery until she exposes her real self to the King some decades later, de Erauso's life is fraught with conflict between and against her fellow man, a truth so striking that it comes through in the author's staid, emotionless depiction that is wholly lacking of any personal introspection that would afford some understanding of her deeper emotions. No additional sources cited.

Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
[ send me this essay ]
Within the genre of anti-war novels, none is surpassed by Johnny Got His Gun. This World War I novel uses stark realism to shock and literally bring the reader to consciousness about the consequences of war. On a lighter side, The Good Soldier Schweik warmed the cockle of the heart of the reader with it's cynical, but comical, outlook on the illogics of war. Then came Catch 22. The subject of death permeates the text of Catch 22. Not only death of the body, but death of reason and of the ability to communicate or to rely on reality. This 5 page paper explores the concept of death as it is presented in the book and looks at the question of: who or what is the enemy? Bibliography lists 4 sources.
