E. L. Doctorow's "Welcome To Hard Times": Thematic Analysi
[ send me this essay ]
10 pages in length. Critics have long heralded E. L. Doctorow's Welcome To Hard Times as significantly more realistic of the Western frontier than what other books and Hollywood movies have depicted. Conspicuously absent from Doctorow's version is the squeaky clean, overly friendly image in late nineteenth century society, where men were praised for their heroism and problems were readily extinguished by legal intervention. What is clear in Doctorow's portrayal is the evil so prevalent to mankind, the depraved and corrupt existence that so many people adopted as a means by which to stay alive. This aspect of overwhelming evil and suffering is quite explicitly illustrated through the author's insightful understanding of how things really were during this time of great strife.
