American writer Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was born into a wealthy New York family and throughout her career spent a great deal of time traveling and living in Europe. While the short story “Roman Fever” (1936) reveals her love for the beauty of the city of Rome, perhaps more importantly the story reveals the levels of deception which can live within the propriety of the upper classes. Through the analysis of several elements of fiction within the work, readers are able to understand how Wharton manages to maintain formality within the text yet still offer readers an increasingly interesting story.

Because of this, readers are shocked by the eventual revelations of two supposedly properly raised ladies.
