Same-Sex Behavior And Pederastic Relationships In Athens: Not All Ancient Authors Approved
[ send me this essay ]
7 pages in length. Although widely accepted in ancient Athens, same-sex behavior and pederastic relationships were not altogether accepted or highly regarded by period authors. In fact, while some acknowledged the prevalence of such interaction by way of their literary works, others made a blatant point of demonstrating their distaste by pointing out how neither they nor their characters take part in the activity. Examining such authors as Plato, Aristophanes, Aristotle and Hippocrates, it is possible to gain a clearer understanding of how this opposing perspective was more apparent than many actually realize. Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the Important Role of Nature in “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” and “Kubla Khan”
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 3 page paper discussing the role of nature in Coleridge’s work. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) wrote during the Romantic Movement under which his prose and poetry took in an understanding of nature which was intrinsically important during his time. His work often explored the many sides of nature including its beauty, power, and sometimes the mental isolation man can feel when removed from nature or when immersed in it. Two works “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” and “Kubla Khan” explore different physical and mental components imposed by nature by Coleridge as the Mariner is punished both physically and mentally in his crime against and disrespect for nature while the obvious respect for the force of natural elements is shown throughout “Kubla Khan”.
