Sociological Concepts in Things Fall Apart
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page research paper that analyzes Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart (1959). The writer argues that this work can be viewed as a comprehensive sociological study of Nigerian Igbo culture. Okonkwo, Achebe's protagonist, is a member of this tribe and is considered the quintessential embodiment of its militaristic ideals. As this fact suggests, examination of this novel, its plot and characterizations, conveys to the reader a great deal of sociological detail about this Nigerian people. This examination shows how Achebe tells Okonkwo's story against the backdrop of his own culture and worldview, which includes sociological information on the many areas. These include the militaristic ethos of the Igbo tribe; the Igbo orientation towards women; religious orientation; xenophobic reaction to "others" outside their tribe; and the encroaching influence of British colonialism. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Socrates in the “Apology” and Ovid and “Metamorphoses”
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page comparison of these two works and men. The author of this paper contends that there are many similarities between Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” and Socrates’ “Apology”, not the least of which is the fact that Ovid could be said to be a recreation of Socrates, a manifestation of that “gadfly” Socrates warns of in the “Apology” which acts to stir the great steed of the Athenian state into action. While Socrates in this analogy feeds upon the blood of Athens, Ovid feeds upon the blood of Rome. No additional sources are listed.

Sojourner Truth's 'Ar'n't I A Woman?': SemanticInterpretation
[ send me this essay ]
5 pages in length. Sojourner Truth exposes her defiance toward the system's rules, which, as she points out, have all been designed by men, for men. Eloquent in both style and approach, Truth does not allow her gender to get in the way of insisting that nowhere in the framework of
human rights has it been established that men are in any way more deserving than women. The writer discusses the semantic interpretation of one passage of Truth's historic speech. No additional sources cited.

Soldier’s Home/Krebs and Passivity
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page essay that examines Ernest Hemingway’s protagonist in his short story “Soldier’s Home,” Harold Krebs, a young man who has been traumatized by his wartime experience. He returns home physically to a small town in Oklahoma only to discover that he can no longer return home mentally. He no longer fits in. His parents expect him to pick up the threads of his life precisely where he left off; in other words, to be unchanged. Mentally scarred, Harold just wants to be left alone and feels totally passive towards his environment. Hemingway’s story explores the extent and boundaries of Harold’s passivity, as he dramatizes the fact that Harold, while passive, comes to a point where he can no longer even pretend that he is unchanged, which means he must leave his parents and family in order to maintain his own identity. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Somerset Maugham/An Official Position
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page essay that discusses Somerset Maughan's short story "An Official Position." The writer argues that this story is a study in detailed characterization. In this narrative, Maugham paints a word picture of an individual, Louis Remire, a former French policeman who is now serving a twelve-year sentence for murdering his wife. While Remire is a cold-blooded psychopath, totally without morals, human compassion or empathy, he sees himself as a proper "official" of the state, carrying out his office as prison executioner with diligence. Maughan's complex psychological analysis tells Remire's story from the protagonist's point of view; however, Maughan expertly weaves in details throughout the narrative that illuminate Remire's true nature.
