The Female Characters of George Eliot:
[ send me this essay ]
This 22 page report
discusses the writer George Eliot (1819-1880) and her remarkable
ability to present the women of Victorian England to the literary
world. Typically, Victorian literature presents an idealization
of women as passionless and innately virtuous models of feminine
behavior. Eliot came to occupy a central position in English
literary circles and was thought of as bold and unconventional in
both her personal life and her work. Her writing most often
compares industrialization with the halcyon and generally rural
archetype and offers a discourse on the limitations and suffering
caused by gender and class discrimination, as well as individual
characters’ struggles with their personal moral development and
their relationships with others. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

The Females of Edgar Allen Poe's "Ligeia" and Rose Terry Cooke's "My Visitation"
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page overview of the underlying theme of femininity in these two short stories. Suggests that in many ways these depictions vary somewhat from the stereotypical vision of male writers depicting weak and inferior women and female writers presenting a more factually accurate portrait of their female characters. In many ways Poe presents a stronger image of women in "Ligeia" than does Cooke in "My Visitation". While Poe's short stories could be said to glorify the image of a strong woman, Cooke's actually derides that strength. No additional sources are listed.

The Forest in Hansel & Gretel
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page essay that analyzes the symbolic meaning of the Grimms' fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. On April 18, 1805, Jacob Grimm wrote to his brother Wilhelm that, in his opinion, the only time when a conceptualization of the past, that is, the "world of knights," was possible was in the forest (Zipes 68). In the imagination of the Brothers Grimm, the setting of the German forest is metaphoric and symbolic. Many of today's psychologists and therapists agree, as they perceive fairy tales as archetypal in nature, and able to appeal in images to fundamental aspects of the human psyche. As this suggests, Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm can be read as an allegory that symbolizes the empowerment of two children against child abuse. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
