The Odyssey by Homer: A Summary and Discussion of Two Articles Regarding the Work
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing two articles about The Odyssey by Homer. Tutorial language is inserted into the paper using square brackets. In a summary and discussion of Peter Green’s article “Reading, translating, and speaking Homer” (1997) and Paul Cantor’s article “The art in the popular” (2001), both Green and Cantor compare Homer’s The Odyssey in comparison with the literature and entertainment of the time and in the centuries since. Green in his analysis reveals that regardless of translation or critic of the work, all researchers do agree that the work is timeless in the aspect that since it was written, it has been included in almost every work, discussion or analysis since, not only in the field of literature but also in the areas of historical, military or psychological analyses. Cantor, on the other hand, argues that the work is slowly losing its appeal as the popular masses seem to be turning away from classic literature. He further ventures that the “classic” aspect of the work has gained more respectability over the course of history as during its time it would have been considered culturally vulgar, popular to the masses but not accepted by the critics.
