Time and Historical Perspectives Found in the Works of Adrienne Rich, T.S. Eliot, and Toni Morrison
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing time elements used in “Diving into the Wreck”, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” and “Song of Solomon”. Adrienne Rich, T.S. Eliot and Toni Morrison all use effective perspectives to explore psychological time and history in their works “Diving into the Wreck”, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” and “Song of Solomon”. Rich’s “Wreck” takes the diver back into an historical environment once the diver is under the water and surrounded by the dark sea and the artifacts. Eliot’s “Prufrock” wrestles with his imminent aging and what little future and time he has left while asking if in his present and past life he has made good use of time. Morrison’s “Solomon” used the circular life of her character Milkman who tries to discover his ancestry in order to make sense of his own self identity. All the works do not focus on the time theme but use interesting elements to highlight the psychological transition of time from present into the past or future.
