Yeats/Meaning in Old Age
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page essay that summarizes and analyzes 3 poems by Yeats. In three of his best poems, William Butler Yeats addresses the age-old topic of mortality and the bitterness of advancing age. These poems are "Among School Children," "Sailing to Byzantium," and "Byzantium." These three poems thematically share and develop Yeats' thoughts relative to the loss of youth and the decline and decay of the human body contrasted against what is eternal in human experience, which is the medium of art and the striving of the soul toward perfection. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Yellow Wallpaper & Female Marginalization
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page research paper/essay that discusses Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1899), which can be understood as indicative of women's role in late nineteenth century society. This narrative portrays the way in which Victorian patriarchal attitudes served to marginalize women. Male authority trivialized female voices and regarded women more as children in adult bodies than as adult themselves. In addition to this element, Gilman's short story also introduces the way in which the medical professional interacted with women, supporting the cultural paradigm that marginalized women and added the authority of the male doctor to the social boundaries that keep women from having any sense of adult autonomy. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Yod and Joseph
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page paper discussing the android of Marge Piercy's "He, She and
It" in comparison to Pete Hamill's golem of "Snow in August." The violence of Piercy's
world and Hamill's is not so very different, though there is a century between them. Yod
fights the evils that threaten Shira; Joseph the golem takes on those who have severely
injured Rabbi Hirsch. Both Yod and Joseph are difficult to distinguish from humans, and
they both exist only to serve their makers. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Zhang, Lahiri/Memoir and Short Story
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page essay that contrasts and compares 2 works. Lijia Zhang's Socialism Is Great is a memoir, that is, an autobiographical true-to-life account of the author's life. Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies" is a short story, that is, a work of fiction that is entirely the product of the author's imagination. Both works are well-written, compelling narratives. However, because Zhang's text is a memoir, it is written in the first person, with its drama drawing from the real-life events of a person's life. Lahiri's short story is told in the third person, from the perspective of Mr. Kapasi. The drama and involvement of the reader in this story derives from the subtle nuances of character and implication in the narrative, which require the reader to interpret the story, rather than being obliquely told the narrative's meaning. Examination of the two works shows that the principal difference between these two examples of a memoir and a short story, from the reader's perspective, is the style of writing employed by each author. No additional sources cited.
