Matthew 22:34-46
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page sermon on Matthew 22:34-46. In Matthew's Gospel, that is the Jewish world of the first century, the only people whom demographic groups that Jesus spurns are religious leaders, the "chief priests, Sadducees, scribes and Pharisees" of Jerusalem (Kozar 78). When Jesus comes to Jerusalem, it is presented in Matthew as the "culmination of his ministry," and the chief priests and Pharisees are fully aware of the fact that Jesus' parables are targeted against them (Kozar 78). In Matthew 22:34-46, a "scribe of the Law" attempts to trap Jesus into what would be a politically incorrect gaff for this era by asking Jesus which "Law is the greatest" (Kozar 78). However, Jesus' answer is superbly stated, as he teaches that "all of the Law and the Prophets rest on the command to love God and neighbor (22:34-40)" (Kozar 78). Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Matthew Arnold: Views On Hebraism And Hellenism In Relation To Western History
[ send me this essay ]
5 pages in length. It can be argued that along with his mentor Socrates, Matthew Arnold virtually set the stage for effective perception of Hebraism and Hellenism. These European cultures came to represent various depictions to Arnold, whose own personal quest was to seek out the inherent values of Hellenism, a concept that revolved around reason, the pursuit of knowledge and the arts, moderation, civic responsibility and bodily development. Hebraism, on the other hand, stood for a moral theory or emphasis that was attributed to the Hebrews. In his interpretation of both cultures, Arnold considered them as harboring a dual historical heritage. The writer discusses Arnold's interpretation of Hebraism and Hellenism as they relate to Western history. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

McCloskey's "On Being An Atheist"
[ send me this essay ]
5 pages in length. The uncertainty that fuels atheism was brought to the forefront of public awareness in H. J. McCloskey's literary piece entitled "On Being an Atheist." The extent to which readers were both appalled and enlightened at the same time speaks to the level of opposition in the author's arguments that parallels the degree of contest his critics dealt. Indeed, McCloskey clearly illustrated in precise detail how he believed the cosmological and teleological arguments for God's existence were sorely lacking any substantiation; rather, the culmination of his philosophy was to defiantly state how faith is too risky a venture when the supporting proof is so weak. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
