Cost-Benefit Analysis of Proposition 82
[ send me this essay ]
A 17 page paper discussing the possible benefits of California's Proposition 82, which if passed will provide access to universal (voluntary) preschool for all 4-year-old children in the state, followed by a cost-benefit analysis of the effects of the initiative. If approved, Proposition 82 will require that the state of California provide universal preschool of at least a half day for 180 days during the year for all of the state's four-year-olds. It is to be funded with an additional state income tax of 1.7 percent on taxable incomes over $400,000 for individuals; $544,457 for heads-of-household and $800,000 for married couples. Superficially the measure appears to be workable and fair, but closer analysis reveals that the measure constitutes a lose-lose scenario for all involved, including the 22,000 additional preschoolers who directly benefit from the program. Proposition 82 promises to have far-reaching and highly negative effects. Bibliography lists 19 sources.

Costs of Rebuilding New Orleans
[ send me this essay ]
A 4 page paper discussing the macroeconomic costs of rebuilding New Orleans in the wake of two record-breaking hurricanes and the floods resulting from levee breaks. The paper suggests that reestablishing the French Quarter as a tourist attraction and giving 10,000 households $100,000 each perhaps could be more beneficial than intense government involvement. Empowering families to make their own decisions about their futures can create and fuel economic activity that government spending cannot, creating a self-sustaining economy rather than a sinkhole for tax dollars. Crime and Campaign Promises
[ send me this essay ]
An 8 page paper discussing the dichotomy between campaign promises relating to crime and actual observed results. We expect political candidates to lay out for us the reasons we should vote for them rather than for their opponents, and candidates oblige this expectation by making promises during their campaigns outlining the things they will do once they gain office. There will be reform, they promise. Things will be different. They will take some sort of stance against crime. Too often, these promises are made for the purpose of gaining votes rather than truly making a difference. In the end, the most effective law and order campaigns have been those that have come about without any direct influence on the part of newly-elected officials at any level of government. Bibliography lists 17 sources.
