Justifying Power
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page essay that addresses the topic of political expediency. Presumably leaders and nations base their actions on rationales that place put a priority on the welfare of the people, rather than political expediency. However, in the early sixteenth century, Niccolo Machiavelli pointed out that actions that are political expedient are necessary in order for those who are in power to remain in power. Rather than going through the charade of pretending that there are other rationales for authoritarian action, Machiavelli cut to the heart of the matter and laid out a course of action for rulers, based on his observations of human nature, that he calculated as effective and these actions were based on political expediency rather than morality. This examination of political expediency looks first at Machiavelli's philosophy and then at how it is evidenced in British colonial policy in the first half of the twentieth century as evidenced in the writing of George Orwell. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Justifying The Invasion Of Iraq
[ send me this essay ]
4 pages in length. Justifying America's invasion of Iraq as it relates to lead coalition amidst France's decision to abstain speaks to the divergent levels of panic September 11th left upon the world. The United States has believed all along that other global nations were just as impacted by 911's terrorist attacks as it was, expecting all the while they would become part of America's coalition when wartime ultimately arrived. When this was not the case, it became painfully clear how several countries – namely France – were nowhere near the level of intensity that America harbored against Iraq. Kaplan, Imperial Grunts
[ send me this essay ]
An 8 page book review and research paper that profiles Robert D. Kaplan’s book Imperial Grunts. Reviewer William Holahan states that Kaplan “defines the reach of America’s new imperialism as (being) so broad that it touches all areas of operation under the present combatant commanders” (Holahan, 2006, p. 49). As this definition suggests, an interesting feature of Kaplan’s perspective is that he perceives the idea of America as an imperial conqueror in the tradition of “ancient Greece and Rome, the Ottoman empire, and…Great Britain” as merely stating reality and he, more or less, sees this as a good thing, with the qualification that it should be handled properly (Holahan, 2006, p. 49). This examination of Kaplan’s Imperial Grunts looks specifically at the fifth and eighth chapters, which deal with the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, respectively, in order to ascertain a fuller and more detailed picture of Kaplan’s view of U.S. imperialism. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Karl Marx’s “Das Kapital (‘Capital’) -- A Critique of PoliticalEconomy
[ send me this essay ]
This 6 page report discusses Karl Marx (1818-83) and
one of his most important works, “Das Kapital.” Marx’s
fundamental assertion, in the most simple of terms, was that all
events are determined by economic forces. His analysis of
capitalist economy and his theories of historical materialism,
the class struggle, and the meaning of value evolved as the basis
of modern socialist doctrine. Those ideas are of decisive
importance with respect to revolutionary action, his theories on
the nature of the capitalist state, the road to power, and the
dictatorship of the proletariat. Most of those ideas and ideals
are captured in one of his most famous works “Das Kapital.”
Bibliography lists 6 sources.
