The Sexual Revolution of the 1920s
[ send me this essay ]
A 12 page contention that the 1920s did indeed spawn a sexual revolution. The industrialization which would overtake the U.S. in this time period would impact us in some very astounding ways. One of these ways was the advent of the sexual revolution, a revolution in which the mores and social behavior of the newly-named “flapper” would usurp those of the traditional American housewife. The flapper would come to epitomize the liberation of American women from the rigidly-defined patriarchal system which had kept them and their female ancestors bound practically since the beginning of mankind’s reign on earth. The Status Of Men And Women In Early Modern French Society: Bertrande De Rols And Francois Poullain De La Barre's Treatises
[ send me this essay ]
7 pages in length. Had Bertrande de Rols learned to read and lived long enough to have had the opportunity to partake of Francois Poullain de la Barre's "Three Cartesian Feminist Treatises," thereby giving her the chance to debate with him the status of men and women in early modern French society, one might readily surmise how gleefully overwhelmed and supportive she would have been with his argument. Responding with resounding defense, Bertrande – as depicted in Natalie Zemon Davis' "The Return of Martin Guerre" – would have likely helped him champion his cause, since she was quite a defiant, strong willed woman in an era when such attributes were not readily accepted in the female gender. Even though her situation in sixteenth-century France may have reflected a bit more gender equality in certain familial ways – "…the testaments in the area around Artigat rarely benefit one child but instead provide dowries for the daughters…(If there are only daughters, the property is divided equally among them)" (Zemon Davis PG) – Bertrande would have experienced for herself the extent to which such inequity was ripe for challenge in relationship to the world that Poullain experienced a century later. The Study of Gender Relations and Racism, Classism, Heterosexism and Anti-Semitism
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing gender relations and the study of racism, classism, heterosexism and anti-Semitism. Gender as a concept has often been a source for social inequality as too have race, class, sexuality and religion. A study of gender relations however shows that gender, as with many other issues of inequality, is actually a social construct and not a primary attribute of an individual. Gender, like race, class, sexuality and religion, is often misunderstood and the cause of prejudice based on traditional, white, upper class, male, Western social theories. Recent psychoanalytical, cultural and feminist studies, on the other hand, reveal that most of the “predefined” concepts used today are actually social constructs which vary from culture to culture and a “consciousness raising” must occur in order to overcome the hierarchical organizations which lead to inequality.

The Subjugation of Women From Ancient Times to the Seventeenth Century
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page discussion of the ancient and historic subjugation of women. Contends that while differences in the societal roles between men and women may at one time have been justifiable, this justification has not been valid for centuries. Points out change became a particularly obvious part of the Victorian Era. Concludes that different women took different approaches to effect the changes which they saw as necessary in regard to their traditional gender roles in the Victorian Era. While many chose to stay in the home in the same role they had occupied for years, others sought jobs, and still others sought education. In comparison to the women's movement which we know today, the women's movement of this earlier time was muted to say the least. Never-the-less progress was made and women slowly began to carve their own niche into society as a whole. Bibliography lists 1 source.
